Why You Should Consider Dental Cat Food For Your Feline Friend

The premium pet food market is proving to be recession proof right now, with manufacturers seeing strong consumer demand from savvy shoppers who want to feed their pet the best possible food for their budget.

Consumers are now increasingly studying the packaging and nutritional content of their pet’s food before purchasing and are now shunning the cheaper foods packed full of additives and rabbit food animal by-products in favour of more quality products with significant amounts of one type of meat. But, were you aware that when purchasing food for your cat there is one other feature you should be on the look-out for?

Dental health problems are one of the most common afflictions that vets see in cats. It is very easy for plaque and tartar to build up on a cats teeth, and left untreated this can lead to serious gum disease and the removal of the teeth.

This is clearly distressing for the cat, but still very common amongst our nation’s felines. A diet of wet, canned food is often to blame because this soft food does little to clean the teeth; in fact it if far more likely to remain on them throughout the day.

To counteract this problem, many cat owners have made the switch to dry food. Dry food is more abrasive than wet and helps to remove small amounts of plaque as it rubs against the cat’s teeth when chewing.

However, there is still a huge gulf between different brands of dry cat food in terms of their nutritional qualities and their abrasiveness. If you are in search of a premium dental cat food then it is likely that you will have been recommended various foods by your Vet. However, these are sold at alarmingly high prices which can be prohibitive for many cat owners.
